RAA investigation reveals shocking road conditions in Yorke Peninsula

Monday, 6th May 2019

RAA is urging urgent maintenance and upgrades to numerous sections of the Yorke Peninsula road network following its latest regional road assessment.

As well as the need for key infrastructure investment to duplicate the Augusta Highway, RAA has also identified serious safety concerns with major thoroughfares across the peninsula.

“As a result of our investigations and community feedback, RAA’s Road Safety team has identified some key areas of improvement and further investigation that are required in the Yorke Peninsula region,’’ RAA’s Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain said.

“Some roads are in a shocking condition, including the Spencer Highway between Maitland and Minlaton.’’

Tragically, between 2013 and 2017, 37 people lost their lives and 902 people were injured as a result of crashes on Yorke Peninsula.

Mr Mountain said the issues identified across the network ranged from basic maintenance, such as filling pot holes, to upgrades like shoulder sealing, road widening and building more overtaking lanes, as well as major infrastructure investment to duplicate Augusta Highway.

“This concerns the safety of everyone using the roads, including local residents, children on school buses, commercial traffic and tourists,’’ he said.

“It’s not just people’s safety being put at risk - the struggling road network is also having an economic impact on freight transport efficiency.’’

RAA’s Road Safety Team travelled 2,500km over five days while assessing roads on the Yorke Peninsula as part of its Regional Road Assessment Program. This involved consultation with local stakeholder organisations and RAA members to help guide which roads and locations were assessed.

The recommendations of the 2019 Yorke Peninsula Regional Road Safety Assessment include:

Augusta Highway: Progressive duplication between Port Wakefield and Port Augusta. Augusta Highway is SA’s busiest single lane regional highway, with traffic only expected to increase.

Copper Coast Highway: Install three overtaking lanes to improve safety and efficiency, and improve the road surface between Kadina and Wallaroo.

Yorke Highway: Seal shoulders between Ardrossan and Marion Bay to provide a much needed safety boost to this vital Yorke Peninsula corridor.

Owen Road: Repair uneven and undulating sections between Templers and Hoskin Corner.

North Coast Road: Seal the road between Point Turton and Point Souttar.

Spencer Highway: Road reconstruction and reseal of road sections between Maitland and Minlaton.
