Road Champions

In the lead up to this year’s state election, RAA asked all South Australian motorists to become a Road Champions and join the drive for safer roads.

On behalf of our 700,000 members, RAA called for safer roads, including an independent Safety Camera Commissioner, a commitment to upgrade the Horrocks Highway and Victor Harbor Road, and greater investment in road safety education.

Safety Camera Commissioner: A Safety Camera Commissioner would act as an independent regulator of speed and red light cameras in South Australia, overseeing the placement and operation of all cameras. We suggest the position could be funded from the Community Road Safety Fund.

Horrocks Highway: An upgrade is needed between Gawler and Clare to improve safety on Horrocks Highway, including the installation of four additional overtaking lanes, roadside barriers and rumble strips to reduce the risk of motorists running off the road.

Victor Harbor Road: We want Victor Harbor Road to be duplicated to Mount Compass, along with an increase in the width of the road south of Mount Compass to include centre barriers to mitigate head on crashes.
